The long non-winding road to the south (part 5) ...

The day before when I arrived in Agreda it was very busy and noisy at the bar. There were an awfull lot of children running around and screaming. It turned out they were "celebrating" having had a nice football tournement in town. Luckily they left shortly after I arrived ...

I then enjoyed the quietness at the bar, fled for the card evening of the 50+ seniors of 50+ and had a nice (but too late) diner in the restaurant. Spanish do eat very late at afternoons (from 14h00 on) and evenings (at 21h00) which is not very handy for people using somewhat more calories. That was all and I went to bed soon after diner.

Then Agreda is not "the place to be". However I must admit that I actually did not see Agreda at all. I arrived quite late and was tired. And I simply wanted to continue to Soria since I had high expectations of that town. Besides that I knew that the next day would also be a proper day to cycle. Then I would have a tailwind, although there again would be more and more very strong winds during the day and the days to come ...

Since I was wakened very early by the terrible noise of dozens of chairs being slided over the tiles in the bar while cleaning I packed early. This one-night-only stay was just to compensate for the many delays caused by the weather. The goal was a campsite in Soria. And although the distance was not that big it is always nice to have enough time to enjoy the day. Besides that it is getting dark more and more early to ofcourse. xxx Picture Missing xxx As usual I could not get non-sugar products for breakfast. Bread like this is toasted in an oven and then called a tostada. In this hotel they even had a special (tunnel) oven with a small conveyorbelt for the tostadas. Spanish normally eat this every day but with a layer of tomato pulp on it and then add some aceite de oliva (olive oil) on it.

Unfortunately I don't like that so that also is no alternative for me. Since I had forgotten to search for a supermercado yesterday evening to buy jamon or queso (ham or cheese) myself I had no option then to eat this sugar bombs.

The bread is a special type. It looks and tasts like and is probably as healthy as cardboard if not toasted. But as soon as it is toasted it looks and tastes oké. However I can't stop thinking it is not and never will be healthy or even neutral ...

So I cycled out of Agreda early. xxx Picture Missing xxx And in these abandoned areas xxx Picture Missing xxx it is very uncertain xxx Picture Missing xxx if one will find xxx Picture Missing xxx anything xxx Picture Missing xxx to eat xxx Picture Missing xxx today ...

And this sign exactly tells the whole story. This is the land of the long and empty distances ... There are no campings at all here that you can cycle without racing. Sometimes even the hostals are very far apart (if you have to do all the real work by yourself that is). From this sign on the camping in Soria is "only" some 42 kms away. However the good thing is they are abierto todo el ano. So they are open all year, thank you Mr(s). Sunshine.

So from Vera de Moncayo to Agreda (former blog, click here), is 33 kms with 526 vms. And from Agreda to Soria is 55 kms with 564 vms. Which makes 88 kms with 1090 vms in total via the shortest way which means mainroad. On this track the hotel in Agreda is the only official option to stay for the night. The fine on wildcamping in Spain is officially € 5000 !!! Altough I never heard of or read about anyone really having been fined.

Besides that there are simply no alternatives for any shortest way. Then since it here is all about long distances no one who would even consider to build any second road heading for the same direction.

Only when there is an autopista or autovia (highway) is there also a N-road (2-lane national longdistance connection). That is so people have the possibility to drive to i.e. their (very local) town anyway (or to any other local point). And because it legally must be possible to travel the country whithout having to pay toll.

In these modern days it is no longer possible to survive in the middle's of nowhere ...

Just before reaching to Soria I stopped at a restaurant along the road. They had an awfull lot (8 meters all along the bar) of tapas and I choose the salade. Twice haha. The breakfast had been bad and therefore little and I did not have lunch since there was no lunch anywere today. Plus the wind was now already so strong that it was doubtfull if I would be able to cook some noodles or ravioli at the camping. xxx Picture Missing xxx I was now very close to Soria. Were I wanted to put up my tent at the camping at the other side of town. xxx Picture Missing xxx I had not been in any interesting town since Pamplona and was terrorised by wind and rain too long. So I was enthousiastic to visit Soria disguised as a real tourist haha. xxx Picture Missing xxx I cycled past Soria along the Rio Duero river without seeing anything of the town. But it was a very nice path in a recreational area and I would visit Soria anyway at the days to come.

But then I came into trouble since the gps track was false. It pointed me to the left towards a very small bridge that was to narrow to cycle and (so) also to push the bike over it. And at the other side there was no path, only some track for hillclimbing specialists. So that path was in the gps database wrongly classified as being a cycle road.

So I continued at the gravelroad until I reached tarmac. And from there I reached the campsite in 10 minutes.

Meanwhile it was already late and getting dark. More worse was the fierce wind that made the situation very uncomfortable. I took some 15 minutes to really have a good judgement of the situation concerning the wind. Then I found a more or less windless campspot in a corner very close to a caravan and a shed. The campsite was almost abonded (except for one camper and one caravan) so I would not have an interference with anyone anyway.

But I was shivering from the cold wind anyway and walked to the canteen 30 minutes before the official openingtime (being 20h00 as I was told). It was open and I returned there with my laptop to make the situation comfortable and profitable. The coffees were good and so were the entrecote and the wine.

The owner and his wife were watching some sort of game with something very round on the tv. Maybe it was "footbal" but I don't know anything about that. When the game was over I was friendly asked to leave. Understandable since I was the only customer. xxx Picture Missing xxx I then landed into my XL sleepingbag which I like very much. More important is that it has Magic in it ! Then every time I lay myself in it I start sleeping almost immediately ! Since it does that job so well I am very happy with it. Although it is a synthetic type, so with high volume and high weight.

It had been another great day with great ups and downs. But it was ending now ...

Unfortunately It Happened during the night. The campsite is located directly next to a 4-lane mainroad and I woke up very often because of the noise of the cars and trucks.

The weather forecast was doubtfull and for the day after tomorrow was even worse. So I decided to continue the next morning already. Again. In other words, I decided to skip my visit to Sorbia ... Cycling on a sunny day is always great. But cycling on a bad day sucks. Exploring a rainy town also does. This doubles up when you don't have a normal night's rest.

Not being able to visit Soria made me sad. But I had forgotten to research for an affordable hotel. And I got more and more the feeling that it would be wise to "hurry" to the south to get into some better weather.

So there is no Stay blog about Soria since I have actually not seen anything of it ... I just have been hiding for the fierce wind at the camping behind a caravan for a few hours. And because of those circumstances I forgot to take any pictures of the situation ...
